ASGER JUEL LARSEN S/S12 PRESS RELEASE

Asger Juel Larsen ignites the alluring and unexpected darkness that can come from summer in his S/S12 'We Live' collection, where electric night skies and intense shadows from the sun play their part in the intoxicating twist. Fusing the two extremes together is what Asger excels at, Living for today, forgetting about yesterday or tomorrow, and showing a kaleidoscope and labyrinth of dimensions to the seasonal traditions.

Ice white leopard print swarms the shorts, like animalistic energy that has managed to fight through an Arctic winter. Coats and shorts look like a melted fire sky, as if stars and planets have blurred their way into the suns exposure. And thunder and lightning is captured and creamed into these designs. Gritty brown material looks like a patchwork of the desert that has been bullied and weathered by the heat into rustic treasure remains.

Sleeveless jackets consistently show up on the scene, stitched with badges and logos that embody a travelling punk that's tasting the bohemian scene. The collection invests in the radical imagination of Asger's teenage years, offering an unconventional sense of adventure. American bikers, 60s mods and horror films all collage together to bring these comic book fantasies to patchwork life. Free spirit is given a tough injection and twist in this instant, encouraging people to explore through their clothes and pick up inspiration on their way.

There's also a working man machinery to the collection, adding something industrial and

unexpected to the aesthetic. After all, work doesn't come to a complete standstill when the sun

comes out to play. The asymmetric zips knuckle an air of toughness, and the skinny fit suits could be interpreted as straight jackets that anyone would want to be trapped in. The postman shorts look concrete, and the zips are the chunkiest blacks imaginable.

The coats dart and gloriously drown their way down to the knees, allowing the shorts to tease out to give summer that air of mystery still. Not one to fall into sync with the stripped down layers and simplicity that governs this sunny season, Asger executes a marriage of darkness and romance that is easy to fall unconventionally in love with.

Sheer is an ever prominent material that drapes the designers world, and this time around its

sparked into ghostly Gothic hoodies, jumpers and shirts that look like faded shadows.

The main logo is knuckled together with fragile bones, and tattoos its way through the collection. Staying true to Asger's punk routes and rebellion, this loud print is used to pop out a retro 90s London vibe in the newly appointed diffusion line . 'East 17' style beanies, jagged sleeveless tops and the electric leopard print all embody the bones, and with platform shoes to boot (in collaboration with Dico Copenhagen), it takes the party monster out from the dark basement clubs into the sun. It's a wonderfully accessible collection that's youth to the bone and a true interpretation of punk, encouraging everyone to adopt adventure and attitude into their everyday silhouette and aesthetic.

Its time to introduce you to another great menswear designer! Asger Juel Larsen is one of London most exciting up and coming designers. This Danish Viking ;) has steadily been working on expanding the AJL world. After his graduation in 2009 he’s immediately got stockists and enormous interest in his work. He is selling in New York, London, Hamburg, Tokyo & Copenhagen! Also whilst he was churning out great collections every season he’s been finishing his MA at London College of Fashion in Menswear and occasionally hitting the DJ decks in London. His AW11 collection was shown for the first time on London Fashion Week with Vauxhall Fashion Scout (super exciting!)His AW11 collection (which was at the same time his MA graduation collection) has been shot by Fashion photographer Ellis Scott (who I wrote about earlier).

His collection was inspired by the American dream and a refinement of his own stylish and apocalyptic way of design collections. The collection takes elements of wild and earthy America with elements of battle uniforms. Heritage prints, native america,gothic, stars and even fetish thrown in the mix this certainly makes for an outstanding collection.

Asger and I have also been selected to appear in a book; 1 brief, 50 Designers, 50 Solutions, in Fashion Design, (to blow my own trumpet here) which is coming out in june! When the time is near I will obviously most certainly enlighten you more about the book but for now check out Asger’s blog and website and enjoy these images from his AW11 lookbook.

As part of Fashion156.com's Designer Tracking Series, in the run up to LFW, we watched the evolution of Asger Juel Larsen's AW 11/12 collection, as we followed him as he acquired hisMA in Fashion Design and Technology at the London College of Fashion right through to his show with the first Vauxhall Fashion Scout, Men's Ones to Watch.

Having already seen Asger's initial lookbook for this collection I was intrigued to see the AW 11/12 lookbook, take two. What first struck me when browsing these images was the clever and subtle use of the American flag as a background in places, like a subliminal message filtering through. His collection remains as stark as I recall as it explores the colonization of Native Americans. References veer from the tribal fringing and teeth to the enveloping of looks by the starred and striped flag.

Looking further into these designs you can't help but interpret a socio-political commentary. The segmented trousers and top held together by strings evokes sentiments of governmental control as it holds power over its citizens like puppets on strings. While looking at Larsen's gothic interpretation of hijabs you suspect it may well be a reference, to how we are silenced by bureaucracy.

Caged capes, leather shirts, trousers, motorcycle caps and wool jackets with a gluttony of zippers are the uniform for this collection, which doesn't just prompt you but rather forces you to think.

Even though fashion week is long gone, there is always more to talk about. This time around all the talk at the S office goes to Asger Juel Larsen, part designer, part friend, all dane and with a new incredible mens collection to be proud of.

When split apart, the collection named “Uncle Sam” takes is reference from the old America, an America Juel Larsen decribes as more wild which clearly shows in his leather pieces. A somewhat gothic yet sublime collection, all in black with focus on the different textures that makes his work strong both in the sometimes military look, but also in the fetish feel one gets. Asger Juel Larsen may be young in light years, but shows his large crowd of followers that the future of London fashion will have his name on list.

LFW: Asger Juel Larsen

Last up for Vauxhall’s Fashion Scout’s “Ones to Watch MEN”, was the sinister AW11 collection from Asger Juel Larsen.

This season, the London College of Fashion MA graduate and Harold Tillman CBE scholarship winner, demonstrated his flare for theatricality with a dramatic collection “inspired by historic events”.

On the catwalk, Juel Larsen’s gothic garments were packed full of macabre imagery- from the religious iconography of crosses emblazoned on naked chests, to the outfits adorned with miniature bones. Here there was even a nod to (king of horror) Hitchcock, with a giant bird-like headdress- the crowning glory for an outfit comprising of laced up black jumpsuit and biker boots.

The historical references were clear in the sweeping cloaks and Victorian top hats, which appeared in several guises throughout the show (at one point even draped in knee length tassels). There was also a touch of the old school Americana with a macabre twist. The American flag’s stripes and stars were turned into monochrome motifs on top hats and sleeveless gilets and punctuated with either lacing or terrifying spikes.

It was an exciting way to draw to a close the first ever “Ones to Watch MEN”.

For you who don’t know, “ones to watch” is a show during London Fashion Week where “industry experts” choose four innovative designers for a collaborative catwalk show. It's London Fashion Week 2011. Nagpeople went to see the talented Asger Juel Larsen show in Vauxhall Fashion Scout. The collection was quite unique with a raw edge inspired by the negative side of the American dream with a UK twist. We had the chance to go back stage to have a closer look at the collection which was overall very impressive.

Building on the success on Vauxhall Fashion Scout's ‘Ones to Watch’ predecessors, MAN day was infused with emerging menswear talent who showed individual, untainted thought, highlighting the importance of such collaborative efforts.

Culminating an 8 week designer track, in which we witnessed him complete his MA collection, shoot his lookbook and cast models for his show, it was rewarding to see it all come together for Asger Juel Larsen in not only exhilarating fashion, but a collection that stole the entire show. Never one to shy away of taking a stimuli and running with it in all shapes and forms, Larsen converted African tribe insidious influences into a primitive walk across Tim Burton/Edward Scissorhands territory. What emerged were oversized top hats with chains of painted-black crucifixes, neck enamouring single-breast army wool outerwear and exposed silver zip trousers in recycled leathers fragments.

The second half of the collection showed even more experimentation and literal execution of the Northern Americana influence - elongated feather head pieces giving way to zigzags of tied up elasticated string, unifying reworked nylon army-wear, monochrome star embossions on a leather breastplate vest with zipped and bandaged shield overlays and a frayed, reworked and twisted American flag wrapped as a floor-sweeping veil with a flash of a bare, cross-tattooed chest. Elsewhere, a fishnet veil embellished with miniature seashells was casually draped over reoccurring top hats projecting a victorious, obstacle-ridden stomp for survival. It was a modern take on American Civil War wear, showing pent-up aggression and anxiety yet a subdued fragility in the flashes of bare skin, bridging London’s unconventional aesthetic with his unashamedly unsaturated vision.

Asger Juel Larsen provided a show-stopping finale for our week of spectacular shows. His collection of daring, audacious garments and jewellery is exactly what we love to see from innovative designers using their creative genius to shock and excite us. Each look was bold, with some styling producing a wearable concept and others creating a work of art.

The collection entitled ‘Uncle Sam’ had a variety of American flags in washed out burgundy and navy, then in black and white leather. The use of the stars and stripes in combination with the dark theme makes reference to Asger’s negative perception of the American Dream. The use of leather, zips, chains, steel, long spike studs, crucifixes, high collars, straight jackets and bones threw the audience into Camden high street or an old Victorian work house.

The first look consisted of a long, black over coat with an extended asymmetric collar covering the lower face. There were swathes of leather whipping from one shoulder and the model wore a top hat appliquéd with large crucifixes. The hat had a chain hanging down and around the chin, which was a common feature on hats in the show. There were garments that wrapped around the body engulfing the torso in leather and fastenings. Then there were pieces that left little to the imagination with thighs and midriffs on show through corseted gaps in leather and denim. The show contained a happy medium between avant-garde costumes and wearable items such as large cowl neck knitwear and bronze washed jeans. The accessories highlighted the Native American chief influence with their Aztec necklace and feathered headpiece. A small splash of colour was found in the boots where Asger collaborated with ‘Underground Footwear’. The huge sack-like, back-packs were a highlight of the show and a desirable, trend driven piece this season.

The models had religious or tribal tattoos, some real; others painted on. This added to each character’s defiant grunge quality. They would all have been at home as a character in a gothic but glamorous and possibly homoerotic play, likewise a Tim Burton film.
